 Mr Alfonso Avila,
Founder, President EasyFly As a Business Administrator, he has faced multiple corporate challenges in different stage of his life. He was very successful as an Administrative Director and faculty member at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla. He was then awarded a US Congress scholarship for a Master of Science Degree at New York University, Albany in 1973. In 1978 he joined Avianca as comptroller and later became the Company’s Financial Manager in Miami from 1981 to 1985. He was then promoted to company-wide VP of Finance, a position he held for 5 years. Afterwards Mr. Avila was appointed in 1990 as President of SAM – Sociedad Aeronáutica Medellín – one of Avianca’s affiliate companies. In 1993 Mr. Avila co-founded and made AeroRepública, the country’s number 2 airline in less than 12 years of operations while competing with other well-known carriers. Under his management, AeroRepública’s shared surpassed 35% of the jet routes market in 2004, with annual growth numbers of 15%. This, in a time when commercial aviation was going through a difficult period worldwide, AeroRepublica is considered to be a Latin American pioneer in the concept of low cost airlines. Under his watch, AeroRepublica was named number 1 in service by independent certifying and polling agency Centro Nacional de Consultoria. AeroRepublica, also became the only ISO 9001-CERTIFIED Latin American airline, as awarded by BVQI, Bureau Veritas Quality International in March 2003. In February 2004 AeroRepublica received Portafolio’s Most Admired Company Award as per its readers in a Web-based survey in February 2004 against major Colombian corporations such as Carvajal, Exito, Alpina, etc. All of which have received the award previous years. In 2005 he led the sale of AeroRepublica to Copa Airlines, one of Latin America’s most important air carriers, part of Continental Airlines. In 2007 He created EasyFly, the first low cost carrier in Colombia. During the first two years of operation, it accured 20% in participation in the target market.
